Removing Black Mould Safely (And Stopping It Coming Back)
Black mould is one of the most common cleaning problems we see in Derby homes. It tends to appear on bathroom sealants, around windows and in corners that stay cold. Removing it safely matters for your health, and stopping it coming back matters for your peace of mind.
Safety first
Always wear rubber gloves and open a window before you start. If the patch is larger than a dinner plate, also wear a basic dust mask. Mould spores are released when you disturb them, and you do not want to breathe them in.
What works on small patches
For small bathroom and window-frame patches, a dedicated mould remover spray (the thick gel kind) is the easiest option. Apply, leave for the time stated on the bottle, then wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid mixing different cleaners.
On painted walls, white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water is gentler and surprisingly effective. Spray, leave for an hour, then wipe and dry the surface fully.
What does not work long term
Bleach removes the colour but not always the spores beneath the surface. Painting over mould without treating it first traps the problem and almost always leads to it returning within a few months.
The real fix: stop the moisture
Mould needs moisture to grow. In Derby, our cool damp climate means bathrooms and bedrooms with poor ventilation are the most common trouble spots. Three simple steps make the biggest difference:
- Run the bathroom extractor fan during and for ten minutes after every shower.
- Wipe the shower screen and tiles dry after use, especially in winter.
- Open bedroom windows for ten minutes each morning, even when cold.
