How to steam clean a carpet, step by step
This is the method a professional follows. Done in this order it takes about 20 minutes a room and dries in four to six hours. Done out of order it takes longer and dries slower.

Clear and vacuum, slowly
Move what you can out of the room, then vacuum in two directions at walking-pace-halved. Extraction cannot lift grit a vacuum should have taken, and wet grit is what cuts carpet fibre.

Treat the spots first
Work each stain individually before the general pass, blotting rather than rubbing. Wine, pet urine, grease and blood each need a different product, so guessing one product for all four is how stains get set permanently.

Pre-spray the traffic lanes
Spray solution along doorways, in front of sofas and up the stairs, then leave it to dwell for around ten minutes. This is the step home users skip, and it is the one doing most of the work.

Extract in overlapping passes
Push forward spraying, pull back with the trigger released to recover the water. Overlap each pass by a few centimetres and finish every wet pass with two dry passes to pull the moisture out.

Work backwards to the door
Start at the far corner and clean out of the room, so you never walk back across wet pile. On stairs, work from the top down for the same reason.

Groom the pile
Rake the pile in one direction with a carpet groomer or a soft brush. It dries evenly, looks uniform and avoids the patchy shading people mistake for a bad clean.

Dry it fast
Open windows, run the heating or put a fan on the room. Walkable in about two hours, fully dry in four to six. Keep shoes off and keep furniture off until it is dry, or you get rust and stain transfer from the feet.
