Cleaning Your BBQ Grill After Summer

A summer of weekly BBQs leaves grease, carbon and burnt-on residue everywhere. Here is how a proper end-of-season BBQ clean works in Derby gardens, and why doing it now saves a much bigger job in spring.

Why end of summer is the right moment

If you only clean the BBQ once a year, the most useful time is September or early October — after the last cookout but before the first proper frost. Grease that is left on grates over winter hardens and oxidises, becoming much harder to remove in spring. Worse, it attracts rats and squirrels looking for fat to see them through winter, which is the last thing you want under a BBQ cover.

We get a steady stream of these jobs in early autumn from gardens in Allestree, Oakwood and Chellaston where the gas BBQ has had heavy use over the summer.

What a proper BBQ deep clean involves

  • Strip and soak

Grates, flame tamers, drip trays and any removable parts come out and soak in hot degreaser. While they soak, we work on the cabinet.

  • Degrease the firebox

Built-up grease at the bottom of the firebox is the source of most flare-ups and that 'old grease' smell. We scrape, degrease and wipe clean.

  • Burner cleaning

Burner ports get cleared with a brush so they fire evenly. We do not dismantle gas connections — that is a BBQ engineer's job — but we clean what is accessible.

  • Scrub and rinse

Soaked grates and trays come back out, get scrubbed and rinsed, and dried before going back. Cast iron grates get a light oil to protect them.

  • Outside polish

Stainless steel lid, side tables and trolley get cleaned and polished. The BBQ should look notably better than when we started.

Many customers add the BBQ clean to a regular domestic visit, especially in autumn when the patio and garden furniture also need wiping down before being stored.
