What is actually living in your mattress

A typical mattress that has been used for five years contains tens of thousands of dust mites, several pounds of dead skin cells, sweat residue and whatever pollen and dust have settled in over the years. Dust mites are not visible to the eye and they do not bite — but their droppings are one of the most common indoor allergens.

If you wake up congested, sneeze in the morning, or have asthma that feels worse overnight, your mattress is one of the first things worth investigating. Vacuuming the surface helps a little; a proper hot-water extraction clean is what actually pulls them out of the deeper foam layers.

For Derby families with allergic kids, especially in newer-build homes with carpet in every bedroom, this is one of the highest-impact cleans we do.

Our mattress cleaning process

  • High-filtration vacuum

We start with a HEPA vacuum to lift all surface debris, dead skin and loose dust mite matter. This alone removes a huge amount of allergen load.

  • Pre-treat stains

Sweat marks, urine, blood or food stains are pre-treated with the appropriate solution. We will be honest about which marks will lift and which are too set in.

  • Hot water extraction

Heated water and cleaning solution are injected into the top layer of the mattress, then immediately extracted along with the dirt and allergens. The mattress is left damp, not soaked.

  • Sanitiser pass

A final pass with an anti-microbial treatment kills remaining dust mites and bacteria. Eco-friendly, fragrance-free options are our default for kids' rooms.

  • Drying advice

We open windows, leave the mattress propped if possible, and recommend not putting bedding back on for at least 4 hours. We send a follow-up text with the same advice.

Mattress cleaning is often booked alongside bedroom carpet cleaning for the same allergen-reduction reasons. There is a small saving when we do both in one visit.
