Why Derby water marks glass so badly
Derby's water is classified as moderately hard. Every shower deposits a tiny film of dissolved minerals onto every surface the water touches. On chrome and tiles, that build-up is annoying but visible enough to clean off regularly. On glass shower screens, it is harder to spot until it has been there months — and by then the glass looks permanently cloudy even after you wipe it down.
There is also a longer-term problem. Limescale is mildly alkaline. Over years of contact with glass, it slowly etches the surface, creating microscopic pits. Limescale gets trapped in these pits and the glass never goes back to perfectly clear. This is why a five-year-old screen rarely looks as crisp as a brand-new one even after professional cleaning.
We get this question a lot from people in Mickleover, Chellaston and the newer-build estates where the original glass screens are starting to show their age.
How we tackle it
- Initial assessment
We test a small patch with our standard descaler. If it lifts cleanly, it is surface build-up. If the cloudiness remains, the glass is likely etched.
- Surface descaling
Professional acidic descalers are applied, left to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes, then worked in with a non-scratch scrubber. Most modern shower screens cope with this fine.
- Mechanical polishing
For heavier deposits, we use a mild polishing compound that gently removes the top layer of mineral deposit without scratching the glass.
- Sealant treatment
After cleaning, we can apply a hydrophobic sealant that makes water bead and roll off the glass. This dramatically slows the rate of new build-up.
- Hinges, frames and seals
Limescale also collects in chrome hinges and rubber seals at the base. These get descaled separately as part of the same job.
When the glass is past saving
If a screen has had years of build-up with no descaling, the etching can be permanent. We will improve it noticeably, but will not promise like-new clarity. In a few cases — usually older Mickleover or city-centre flats with original 90s shower screens — we have advised customers it is not worth a deep clean and the screen would be better replaced.
Better to know upfront than spend on cleaning that will not deliver what you hoped for.
