The smell that will not leave
Power cuts in Derby are usually short, but every few years a substation fault or a storm takes out a whole street for 12 to 48 hours. By the time the power comes back on, the contents of a full fridge-freezer are warm, the meat has started to turn, and the smell has worked its way into every seal and shelf.
The instinct is to throw out the food, run a sponge round and call it done. The problem is that fridge plastics and rubber seals are porous. Once putrid liquids have run down the back wall and pooled at the bottom, simple cleaning will not get rid of the smell. You will get hit with it every time you open the door for the next six months.

Our process for a post-outage fridge clean
- Empty and strip out
Everything comes out — shelves, drawers, door bins, salad crisper. Anything that detaches gets soaked in hot soapy water in the sink while we work on the cabinet.
- Treat the runoff areas
We focus on the back wall, drip channel and the area under the salad drawer where liquid pools. These are where the smell originates.
- Deep clean the seals
Door seals come out (or get pulled forward) and are scrubbed with a soft brush. Mould and food residue collect in the folds and rarely get cleaned otherwise.
- Deodorise
We use food-safe enzymatic deodorisers. These break down the proteins causing the smell. We finish with a baking soda treatment left in overnight if needed.
- Reassemble and test
Once everything is dry, we put it back together and run the fridge for 30 minutes to confirm it cools properly. If it does not, that is a fridge problem, not a cleaning problem, and we will tell you.
When the smell will not come out
In rare cases — usually fridges left several days in summer heat — odour molecules penetrate the plastic of the inner casing and the foam insulation behind it. No cleaning product can extract them once that has happened.
If we hit that point we will be straight with you. The fridge may need replacing rather than re-cleaning. Better to know that on day one than after spending money on multiple visits.
