First, what to do in the next ten minutes
Most red wine stains can be successfully treated if you do the right thing in the first hour and call a professional within the next day or two. The right thing is mostly about not making it worse:
- Blot — never rub. Use a clean white cloth or kitchen roll, press straight down to lift the wine out of the fibre
- Work outside-in to stop the stain spreading
- Cold water, not warm. Heat sets the tannins
- Do not pour salt, white wine, soda water or any of the internet remedies on it. They mostly do not work and some make it harder for us to treat later
- Once you have blotted up everything you can, leave it. Cover with a damp white towel if you cannot call us straight away
How we treat the stain when we arrive
- Test on a hidden area first
We always test our solution on a hidden patch of the same carpet. Older or wool carpets need different treatment than synthetic.
- Pre-treat the stain
A targeted wine and tannin remover is applied and left to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Hot water extraction
Hot water and rinse solution are injected into the carpet and immediately extracted, pulling the dissolved wine out with them.
- Repeat if needed
Most stains need 2 to 3 passes. Each pass lifts more of the residual colour. We continue until we hit the realistic limit.
- Dry and finish
We groom the pile back into shape and the area is dry to the touch within 2 to 4 hours.
When the stain is too old to fully remove
Red wine that has been left untreated for weeks, or has been scrubbed and bleached by previous attempts, may not lift completely. We can almost always reduce it to a faint shadow-sm that is much less noticeable, but we will not promise it will disappear if it will not.
