Carpet Cleaning FAQ

Carpet cleaning is one of those services where the basics matter more than the marketing. Drying time, stain types, what method actually works, and what it costs. Here are the answers we give Derby customers every week.

Method and what to expect

Do you use shampooing or steam cleaning?

We use hot-water extraction (often called steam cleaning) for most jobs. It rinses out dirt and detergent in one pass and leaves carpets dryer than older shampoo methods. For very delicate or wool carpets we adjust temperature and dwell time. Old-style high-foam shampooing is rarely the right choice nowadays.

How long do carpets take to dry after cleaning?

Typically 3 to 6 hours in a ventilated room, longer in cold or humid conditions. We extract as much moisture as possible during cleaning. Open windows and run heating gently afterwards if you can. Walking on carpets in clean socks is fine after a couple of hours.

Do you move furniture before cleaning carpets?

We move light furniture (chairs, side tables, small units). Heavy items like sofas, beds and wardrobes we clean around. If you want under heavy furniture cleaned, move it the day before or ask us when booking so we can bring extra hands.

Stains and odours

Will you remove pet stains and smells?

Visible stains usually come out fully if treated promptly. Older or repeated urine stains often improve significantly but may not vanish completely if the underlay has absorbed liquid. For odour we use a treatment that breaks down the proteins causing the smell, not just masking agents. Honest expectations: severely soaked carpets sometimes need replacement of the underlay underneath.

Can red wine stains be removed?

Fresh red wine stains (within 24 hours) usually come out completely. Older wine stains often lift to a faint shadow-sm but may not disappear entirely, especially on light wool carpets. We always test in an inconspicuous area first.

What stains are hardest to remove?

Dye-based stains (hair dye, ink, food colouring), bleach damage and old red wine are the most difficult. Grease, mud, food spills and most pet accidents respond well. We'll always tell you honestly during the quote what we expect to fully clean and what may only improve.

Cost and frequency

How much does carpet cleaning cost in Derby?

Carpet cleaning is priced at our standard £25 per hour rate. A single bedroom usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, a living room 45 to 60 minutes, stairs and landing around 45 minutes. A typical three-bed house works out at 2 to 3 hours (£50 to £75). Heavily soiled carpets and specialist stain treatments take longer, which we estimate over the phone.

How often should I have my carpets cleaned?

Once a year for most homes, every 6 months for households with pets, allergies or young children. Hallways, stairs and living rooms benefit from more frequent cleaning than bedrooms. If you can see traffic lanes, it's overdue.

Can I walk on the carpet straight after cleaning?

Wait 2 hours before walking on it in clean socks, longer before replacing furniture. If you must move furniture back sooner, place small foam blocks under feet to prevent stain transfer from wood or metal.
