Dust Everywhere After Renovation?
Building work is finished but your home is covered in a layer of fine dust. Normal cleaning will not cut it. Here is why post-renovation dust is different and how we deal with it.

Why renovation dust is a different problem
Construction dust is not like normal household dust. It is much finer, lighter, and more persistent. Plaster dust, brick dust, MDF dust, sanding residue. These particles are tiny enough to become airborne at the slightest disturbance and settle on every surface in the house, including rooms that were not part of the renovation.
Even when builders put up dust sheets and plastic sheeting, the fine particles find their way through gaps, under doors, and through any opening. If you have had a kitchen fitted, a bathroom refurbished, a wall knocked through, or floors sanded, you know exactly what we are talking about. You wipe a surface and an hour later it looks dusty again, because disturbing dust in one area sends it airborne to settle somewhere else.
A normal vacuum and some damp cloths are not enough. The dust clogs standard vacuum filters, scratches surfaces if wiped dry, and the finest particles are not picked up by ordinary cleaning methods. Trying to clean it yourself often means spreading it around rather than removing it.
Our approach to post-renovation cleaning
Our after builders cleaning service is specifically designed for this situation. The process is methodical because with construction dust, the order you do things matters:
- Debris removal
We start by removing any leftover building materials, packaging, offcuts, and larger debris. This prevents it being ground into surfaces during cleaning.
- Dry dust removal from top down
Starting with ceilings, light fittings, and the tops of walls, we work downward. This is important because dust falls. If you clean the floor first, it gets dusty again as soon as you disturb surfaces above it.
- Damp wipe all surfaces
Every hard surface gets damp wiped, sometimes multiple times. Window sills, skirting boards, door frames, radiators, inside cupboards, shelving. Construction dust has a way of getting into every crevice and ledge.
- Floor cleaning
Hard floors are vacuumed with appropriate filtration, then mopped. Depending on the floor type, this may need repeating. New tiles often have grout haze that needs specific treatment.
- Window cleaning
Inside window glass, frames, and sills get cleaned. Plaster dust leaves a film on glass that is noticeable in sunlight.
- Kitchen and bathroom focus
If these rooms were part of the renovation, they get particular attention. New kitchens have adhesive residue, protective film marks, and dust in every drawer and cupboard. New bathrooms need grout haze removed from tiles.
Different types of renovation, different cleaning challenges
The type of building work determines how intensive the clean needs to be:
Plastering and skimming
Plaster dust is one of the worst offenders. It is incredibly fine, white, and gets absolutely everywhere. It also becomes paste-like when wet, so cleaning requires careful technique. Damp cloths that are not wrung out properly just create a plaster residue.
Kitchen or bathroom installation
A combination of tile dust, grout residue, plaster dust from making good, and adhesive marks. New units need cleaning inside and out, and protective film often leaves a sticky residue.
Loft conversions and extensions
These are usually the biggest jobs. The construction phase creates dust throughout the house, and there is typically sawdust, plaster dust, and general building debris spread across multiple rooms.
Floor sanding
Even with dust extraction, floor sanding leaves a fine wood dust everywhere. It gets into soft furnishings and can scratch surfaces if not cleaned carefully.
When to book the clean
The ideal time is the day after the builders finish. This gives airborne dust a chance to settle overnight, meaning we can clean it once rather than having to return because more dust has landed after we left.
If you are on a tight schedule and need to move back in immediately, we can clean the same day the work finishes. Just be aware that a second light clean a few days later is sometimes needed to catch any remaining fine dust that was still airborne during our first visit.
