Is it better to hire a carpet cleaner or book a professional?
Hiring a machine is a fair choice for one or two rooms, a fresh spill, or a carpet you freshen up often and do not mind working on yourself. For a whole house, stairs, pets, old stains or a carpet that needs to be dry by evening, a professional hot water extraction clean is usually the better use of your day and your carpet.
Hire can look cheaper on paper, but the machine is only part of the cost. The solution is extra, and the time, lifting and judgement about how much water to use are all yours. A professional clean costs more up front, comes with a fixed quote before work starts, and takes the over-wetting risk off your hands.
Carpet cleaner hire and a professional clean, side by side
| Factor | Hiring a carpet cleaner | Professional clean |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Hire cost varies by shop and the cleaning solution is extra, so check current prices locally before you decide. | Fixed quote before work starts. Every carpet in a three-bed house is usually £100 to £125, with products, equipment and travel inside Derby included. |
| Time | Collecting the machine, setting up, cleaning, emptying tanks and taking it back. Allow most of a day for a whole house. | 3 to 4 hours for every carpet in a three-bed house. |
| Effort | You move the furniture, vacuum first, mix the solution, work the machine and carry the water. The machine is heavy to lift in and out of a car. | We bring everything and do the work. |
| Extraction | Home and hire machines are generally less powerful at extraction than professional units, so more water stays in the carpet. | Hot water extraction with professional equipment, which pulls most of the water back out. |
| Drying | Usually longer than a professional clean, and longer again in cold, damp weather. | Usually 4 to 6 hours with ventilation, longer in cold, damp weather. |
| Results | Good on light soiling and recent marks. Heavy traffic lanes, pet stains and old spills often need several passes, which means more water. | Better on set-in stains, traffic lanes and pet odours. Enzyme treatment for pet stains is £15 to £25 per area. |
| Risks | Over-wetting can lead to musty smells, mould and quick re-soiling. Too much solution left in the pile attracts dirt, and skipping the patch test risks colour run. | Low when the carpet is checked first. If a method is not suitable we say so before starting, and if you tell us within 48 hours that something is not right, we come back to put it right. |
When hiring a carpet cleaner is the right call
Doing it yourself is a sensible choice in the right situation. Hiring a machine makes sense when:
- You have one or two rooms to do, not a whole house.
- The carpet is lightly soiled and you want to freshen it between professional cleans.
- You have a free day, can move the furniture and do not mind the physical work.
- There is no history of pet accidents or old stains underneath.
- You can open windows or run a dehumidifier while the carpet dries.
A fresh spill is a different job. Blot it with a clean cloth, pressing rather than rubbing, long before any machine comes out. That alone saves many stains from setting.
Home washers such as Vax or Shark are lighter and easier to store than a hire machine, but like hire machines they are generally less powerful at extraction than truck or professional portable units. They tend to leave carpets wetter for longer, which is why the way you use them matters so much.
Getting a better result from a hired machine
- Vacuum slowly in two directions first. Dry grit is what dulls a carpet, and a wet machine turns it into mud.
- Check what the carpet is made of. Wool, jute-backed and glued-down carpets need extra care with water.
- Test the solution on a hidden corner and let it dry to check for colour run.
- Measure the solution exactly as the label says. More is not cleaner, and leftover residue attracts dirt.
- Make one slow wet pass, then several dry passes with no spray until very little water comes out.
- Stop if the carpet squelches underfoot. That is too wet.
- Open windows, run fans or a dehumidifier, and keep pets and shoes off until it is fully dry. Put foil or plastic under furniture legs so they do not stain the damp carpet.
When to call a professional
A professional clean is worth it when:
- You want the whole house or the whole downstairs done in one go.
- You have pets. Urine needs an enzyme treatment to break down the odour, not just surface cleaning.
- There are set-in stains, dark traffic lanes or carpets that have not been cleaned for a long time.
- The stairs and landing need doing. A heavy machine on a staircase is awkward and tiring.
- It is an end of tenancy clean and the deposit depends on the carpets.
- The carpet is wool or another delicate fibre, or you are not sure what it is.
- You cannot lift or move furniture, or you do not have a day to spare.
- You want the carpets usable again quickly.
We use hot water extraction and bring the equipment to you. Drying usually takes 4 to 6 hours with ventilation. If you are unsure which method suits your carpet, our guide to carpet shampooing vs steam cleaning explains the difference, and for pets there is more in our help page on pet stains on carpets.

What each option costs
Hire prices change from shop to shop and the solution is bought on top, so check current prices locally. When you compare, add up the hire, the solution, any spot remover, the trip to collect and return the machine, and your own day. Then put that next to a fixed quote with nothing else to buy.
Our prices for a professional clean:
| What is cleaned | Price |

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth having your carpets professionally cleaned?
Yes for most homes, particularly for whole-house cleans, pets, stairs and old stains. A professional hot water extraction clean removes more dirt and leaves less water behind than a home or hire machine, and it takes the work and the over-wetting risk off you. If you only need one room freshened up, hiring a machine can be enough.
Is Shark or Vax carpet cleaner better?
We have not compared them, so we will not pick a winner. Both are home carpet washers, and the result usually depends more on how you use the machine than on the badge: vacuum first, do not over-wet, make dry passes and let the carpet dry fully. Home washers are lighter than a hire machine but generally less powerful at extraction than professional equipment, so check recent independent reviews before buying.
How much does it cost to pay someone to clean carpet?
In Derby we charge around £30 a bedroom, £35 to £40 for a living room and £25 to £35 for stairs and landing. Every carpet in a three-bed house is £100 to £125 and a four-bed house is £130 to £150. Those prices already cover the products and equipment, and travel inside Derby.
How much does carpet cleaner hire cost in Derby?
Hire costs vary by shop and the cleaning solution is extra, so check current prices locally. Add the time to collect and return the machine and the hours of work, then compare the total with a fixed quote for a professional clean.
How long do carpets take to dry after cleaning?
After a professional hot water extraction clean, carpets usually dry in 4 to 6 hours with ventilation, and longer in cold, damp weather. After a hired machine they often take longer because more water is left in the carpet. Open windows or run a dehumidifier either way.
Can too much water damage a carpet?
Yes. Over-wetting can soak the underlay, which dries slowly and can cause musty smells and mould. It can also pull old stains back up to the surface, and a carpet that stays damp for longer re-soils faster.
