Should you clean your oven yourself or pay a professional?
Clean it yourself for light grime and regular upkeep, because a bicarbonate of soda paste and white vinegar will handle that with time and elbow grease. Book a professional when the grease is baked on, the racks and glass are brown, or you do not want hours of scrubbing or caustic sprays in your kitchen. A professional clean of a single oven and hob is £40 to £60 and takes 1 to 1.5 hours.
DIY and professional oven cleaning, side by side
| Factor | Cleaning it yourself | Professional clean |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar cost very little. Caustic sprays and rack bags cost more, and prices vary by shop. | Single oven and hob £40 to £60, double oven and hob £60 to £80, range cooker £75 to £100. |
| Time | A bicarbonate paste works best left overnight, then scrubbed off. Racks need their own soak. | 1 to 1.5 hours for a single oven and hob. |
| Effort | Scrubbing, repeated passes on baked-on carbon, and a lot of rinsing. Racks and door glass are the hardest parts. | We clean the oven, racks, trays, door glass and hob. |
| Results | Good on light grease and fresh spills. Thick, burnt-on carbon often needs several rounds. | Takes baked-on grease off the oven, racks, trays, door glass and hob in one visit. |
| Risks | Caustic sprays burn skin and eyes and need gloves, eye protection and ventilation. Mixing cleaners, especially bleach with anything else, can release dangerous gas. | We use non-caustic products, so there is no caustic spray to handle. Our 100% satisfaction guarantee covers the job: tell us within 48 hours and we will come back. |
How often should you clean your oven?
Wipe up spills once the oven has cooled, before they bake on. Give it a proper clean every 3 to 6 months if you cook for a typical family, and more often if you roast, grill or bake several times a week.
Little and often is what keeps this easy. Grease that is baked on again and again turns into hard carbon, and that is the point at which a bicarbonate paste stops being enough.
When DIY is the right call
Cleaning your own oven is a good idea when:
- The oven has light grease or fresh spills and has been cleaned in the last few months.
- You have a self-cleaning oven and the handbook says to use it.
- You have a spare evening for the soak and an hour to wipe it down.
- You are happy to wear gloves and open windows if you use anything stronger than bicarbonate of soda.
- You would rather spend a little on products than book a visit.
Homemade oven cleaner: bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar
- Let the oven cool completely, then take out the racks, trays and anything loose.
- Mix about half a cup of bicarbonate of soda with a few tablespoons of water until it makes a spreadable paste.
- Spread the paste over the inside surfaces with gloved hands or a brush. Keep it off heating elements, fan openings and gas outlets.
- Leave it, ideally overnight, so it can soften the grease.
- Wipe out as much as you can with a damp cloth, using a plastic or wooden spatula on stubborn patches.
- Spray white vinegar over any paste left behind. It will fizz. Wipe again, then finish with a cloth wrung out in clean water.
Door glass can be done the same way on the inside face. Racks do better soaked: bag-style oven kits seal the racks in a bag with the product overnight, and then you rinse them. Most contain caustic ingredients, so wear gloves and use them somewhere well ventilated, such as outdoors or in a garage.
Caustic oven sprays, bleach and self-cleaning ovens
Caustic oven sprays
Caustic sprays work quickly on heavy grease, but they are strongly alkaline. They burn skin and eyes and give off fumes that irritate the throat and lungs. Wear gloves and eye protection, open the windows, keep children and pets out of the kitchen and follow the pack instructions exactly. Check your oven handbook first, because some linings and coatings are damaged by caustic products. Rinse very thoroughly afterwards, so nothing is left on surfaces that touch food.
Never mix bleach with other cleaners
Bleach mixed with other cleaners, including ammonia, vinegar and other acids, can release toxic gas. Do not use bleach and an oven cleaner in the same session, and do not follow a bicarbonate paste with bleach. Use one product at a time and rinse between them.
Self-cleaning (pyrolytic) ovens
A pyrolytic oven heats to a very high temperature to burn grease to ash, which you then wipe out with a damp cloth. Wipe out loose debris and large spills first, or they can smoke. Take out racks and trays unless the handbook says to leave them in, open a window, and keep pets, especially birds, out of the room because the fumes can harm them. Follow the handbook for your model, as not every oven with a cleaning mode works this way.
When to call a professional
A professional oven clean is worth booking when:
- The grease has been baked on again and again and has turned to thick black carbon.
- The racks, trays or door glass are brown and a bicarbonate paste is not shifting them.
- It is an end of tenancy clean and the oven must look right for the inventory check.
- You do not want to handle caustic products or leave strong fumes in the kitchen.
- It is a double oven or range cooker, which is a lot of surface to do by hand.
- You also want the extractor hood or microwave done in the same visit.
- You have limited time, mobility or space to soak racks.
We use non-caustic products, and racks, trays, door glass and hob are included in the oven price. Our help pages on oven and hob cleaning and a greasy oven at the end of a tenancy go into more detail, and the blog on eco-friendly cleaning products explains what the labels mean.
If the oven is part of a bigger job, such as a deep clean or an end of tenancy clean, tell us and we will include it in one quote.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best homemade cleaner for ovens?
A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, left on overnight and wiped off, followed by a spray of white vinegar on any residue. It is gentle and cheap, and it works well on light grease. It is slower than a caustic spray and often needs several rounds on thick, burnt-on carbon.
How often should you clean your oven?
Wipe up spills once the oven has cooled, and give it a proper clean every 3 to 6 months if you cook for a typical family. Clean it more often if you roast, grill or bake several times a week, because grease that is baked on repeatedly turns to carbon that is much harder to remove.

Is it safe to use caustic oven spray?
It can be, if you follow the instructions. Caustic sprays burn skin and eyes, so wear gloves and eye protection, open the windows and keep children and pets out of the kitchen. Check your oven handbook first, because some coatings and linings are damaged by caustic products. Never mix an oven cleaner with bleach or any other cleaner.
Can I use the self-cleaning function on my oven?
Only if your oven has one, and only as the handbook describes. A pyrolytic oven heats to a very high temperature to turn grease to ash. Remove loose debris and large spills first, take out racks and trays unless the handbook says otherwise, ventilate the kitchen, and keep pets, especially birds, out of the room. Wipe the ash away once the oven has cooled.
Does professional oven cleaning include the racks and hob?
Yes. Racks, trays, door glass and hob are included in the oven price. Extractor hoods are £15 to £25 extra and microwaves are £10 to £15.
